Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule, commonly known as EpCAM (also designated CD326). EpCAM is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is highly and uniformly expressed on the basolateral surface of simple, pseudostratified, and transitional epithelia, and is notably overexpressed on the surface of many carcinomas, including colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, breast, and prostate cancers. In normal physiology, EpCAM plays roles in cell adhesion, signaling, proliferation, and differentiation. Its overexpression in carcinomas is often associated with poor prognosis.
