Folate Receptor Alpha (FRα), encoded by the FOLR1 gene. FRα is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored cell surface glycoprotein that normally facilitates the cellular uptake of folate (vitamin B9). In healthy adults, its expression is highly restricted to specific epithelial tissues (e.g., kidneys, lungs, choroid plexus). However, FRα is overexpressed in a high percentage (70-90%) of epithelial ovarian cancers, as well as in other cancers like endometrial and non-small cell lung cancer. This tumor-selective overexpression makes it an attractive target for therapy.
