Lampalizumab (also known as RG-7417) was an investigational, humanized monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) designed to target complement factor D (CFD). It was developed as a potential therapy for geographic atrophy (GA), the advanced, atrophic form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By specifically inhibiting factor D, a rate-limiting enzyme in the alternative complement pathway, Lampalizumab aimed to reduce chronic inflammation and complement-mediated damage to retinal cells. Despite promising early and mid-stage clinical results, it did not meet its primary efficacy endpoints in Phase III trials (CHROMA and SPECTRI) and its development for GA was discontinued.
