Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1), also known as oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor 1 (OLR1). LOX-1 is a type II transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the C-type lectin family. It is primarily expressed on vascular endothelial cells, but also on macrophages, vascular smooth muscle cells, and platelets. Under normal physiological conditions, LOX-1 expression is low. However, in the setting of metabolic stress like hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes, LOX-1 expression is dramatically upregulated. Its main ligand, oxidized LDL (oxLDL), is a key component of diabetic dyslipidemia.
